James and Sherlyn Greaves

One of the good things created for the miners was the carbide lantern.  The bottom half unscrewed, and was filled with carbide.  The top half was filled with water through the flip topped hole.  The regulator limited the amount of water that was dripped into the carbide, creating gas.  More water made more light, but ran out quicker.  The striker was just like the ones on cigarette lighters.
