Galena Museum
This could be any derrick, any where. This is the top
room where the hoisting machinery is,
and everything is raised or lowered from here. The man in
the rear is the Hoisterman,
with a
can at the top of it's travel. The can is ready to have a
stationary cable hooked to the ring in
the bottom of it. Then the hoisterman will lower
it, dumping the contents onto the screen below.
Usually, there was a
bell up here, and one at the bottom of the shaft
with a wire running between them. These were used for
signaling between the Hoisterman
and the Hooker to raise or lower cans.
