Rev. Robert “Bob” Nichols, 83, of Baxter
Springs, Kan., formally of Picher, died
Friday, September 11, 2009, at his home
after a lengthy illness.
He was born Jan. 4, 1926, to Charles and
Georgina (Stout) Nichols in Picher and
except for a few short years of
traveling had lived in Picher all his
life.
He was a graduate of the Picher High
School class of 1943, attended Miami
Business College. He served in the
United States Navy during WWII two years
in the South Pacific Islands and one
year at Bethesda Hospital. He married
Maxine Stanley Feb. 2, 1945, in Picher.
He served as minister for the Church of
The Nazarene in Picher for several
years, retired as director of purchasing
for Eagle Picher, was a member of the
Lions Club where he received a 50-year
plus pin, served on the Picher School
Board for 14 years, was a life time
member of the American Legion and a
member of the Ottawa County Reclamation
Authority.
He is preceded in death by his parents,
two brothers Jack and Charles Nichols
and a sister Helen Butler.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine
Nichols, of the home; one son, Darrell
and his wife, Debbie Nichols, of Joplin,
Mo.; one daughter, Merle Ann and her
husband, Frank Womack of Baxter Springs,
Kan.; one brother, Earl Nichols of San
Angelo, Texas; four grandchildren -
Nathan Nichols, Robert Womack, Melanie
Bingham and Paige Crowe
Services were held 10 a.m. Monday, Sept.
14, at the Paul Thomas Funeral Chapel in
Miami, with the Rev Dustin Ledford
officiating and assisted by Rev. Claudie
Craig. Interment followed at the
G.A.R. Cemetery in Miami
